Founded in 1956 and a member of the European Movement, the AEDE brings together all those involved in education who want to build a peaceful, democratic Europe that respects the rights of every individual and the rule of law. The AEDE offers avenues for reflection to deepen knowledge of European integration and awareness of the originality and unity of European culture.

AEDE has collaborated on Council of Europe projects on education for democratic citizenship, the teaching of history and modern languages, and the cross-cutting project ‘Combating violence in a democratic society’.

With the European Commission, AEDE has participated in or led projects (Comenius and Erasmus) concerning Education for Active European Citizenship and collaborated in actions led by the Commission (Human Rights, Humanitarian Aid, Rights of the Child, etc.).

From 2016 to 2019, AEDE took part in organising teachers’ meetings during EUROSCOLA sessions at the European Parliament.

From 2015 to 2019, AEDE led the ‘Europe Mediterranean’ working group to provide information on migration issues and to collect and disseminate civil society responses to the question of how to welcome displaced people.

AEDE has national sections in Europe and also maintains close relations with teachers’ associations in the southern Mediterranean, particularly in Tunisia.
