PCI is the international organisation that brings together and supports more than 100 Christian associations and movements throughout the world, working for peace, conflict prevention and reconciliation. PCI grew out of the first Pax Christi movement, created in France in 1945 to promote Franco-German reconciliation, which immediately became international (1947) and led to the creation of numerous independent national ‘sections’ (Germany, Belgium, Italy, Netherlands, United States, Philippines, etc.) united by a common history and shared values.
PCI’s main objectives are the defence of human rights, disarmament, the protection of creation and non-violence. PCI is inspired by the major texts of the Catholic Magisterium (Pacem in Terris, 1963; Gaudium et Spes, 1965; Populorum Progressio, 1967; Laudato Si’, 2015, Fratelli Tutti, 2020) and strives to implement them through the presence and action of its member associations and activists. Its actions include advocacy, training in the field, education for peace and taking a stand on the major causes of justice and peace.
At the international level, PCI is represented at the United Nations (New York and Geneva), UNESCO, the FAO, the Council of Europe (since 1994) and the OSCE. Its action in favour of peace and non-violence naturally leads Pax Christi to encourage and practise inter-religious and inter-convictional dialogue.
